Some houses have a story. Others sit in the middle of one.
The Earns House was built in 1908, but the history here stretches back much further than the home itself. Before this house ever stood on the property, this .78-acre tract was the site of an old hotel that served travelers passing through Blountville. Years later, during the Civil War, this ground became part of the Battle of Blountville. Even today, after a hard rain, artifacts occasionally wash up along Muddy Creek, a quiet reminder that history is never quite as far away as we think.
What I love most is that the home has been renovated without losing its soul. So many old houses have their character stripped away over the years, but that didn't happen here. The original wood floors remain, the woodwork still speaks to the craftsmanship of another era, and the fireplaces continue to anchor the rooms just as they have for generations. Even some of the wallpaper feels like a nod to the home's past.
The layout works surprisingly well for modern living. There are two full bathrooms, both on the main level, including one that has been added more recently. The kitchen is spacious and inviting; perfectly functional as it is, but also ready for someone with a passion for cooking to make it their own. Recent heat pumps and a newer roof provide peace of mind while allowing the home's historic character to remain center stage.
But if I'm being honest, the porch may be my favorite part.
The wraparound porch feels like it was made for long conversations and glasses of sweet tea. Out back, Muddy Creek winds through the property, creating the kind of setting that makes you want to stay outside just a little longer in the evenings. It's peaceful, beautiful, and surprisingly private.
Standing here, it's hard not to think about all the people who have passed through this ground over the years; travelers stopping at the old hotel, soldiers moving through during the war, and the families who have called this house home since 1908.
Now it's ready for its next chapter.
